A series of letters from the front tracing the experiences of a young Black Country soldier in the First World War. The correspondence reveals his mood changes from initial patriotic optimism to resigned fatalism. Sadly he was killed in action and the correspondence concludes with letters from his comrades and from the War Office explaining how he died. A very moving book illustrated with contemporary photographs of the author, his relatives, and his grave. The book is edited by his niece, Kathy Carter.
